Hairstroke vs. Ombré Brows: Which PMU Style Is Right for You?

If you’re thinking about enhancing your brows with permanent makeup, you’ve likely come across two of the most popular styles—hairstroke brows and ombré brows.

I’ve been creating both of these looks for over 20 years, and I’m often asked, “Which one is best for me? The truth is, both are beautiful—but they create very different finishes, and your skin type, lifestyle, and personal style all play a role in which is most suitable.

Let me break it down for you.

What Are Hairstroke Brows?

Hairstroke brows (also known as microblading) are designed to mimic natural brow hairs. I use ultra-fine strokes to create a soft, realistic effect that blends seamlessly with your existing brow shape.

I usually recommend hairstroke brows for:

  • Clients with normal to dry skin
  • Anyone who wants a natural, fluffy look
  • Those with fine or sparse brow hairs

Why my clients love it:

  • It looks incredibly natural
  • It’s great for first-timers to PMU
  • It enhances your shape without being “too much”

Things to be aware of:

  • Hairstrokes may fade quicker on oily or mature skin
  • You’ll likely need more regular top-ups to keep the detail crisp

What Are Ombré Brows?

Ombré brows (also called powder brows) are created using a gentle shading technique. The front of the brow is kept lighter, gradually becoming more defined toward the tail—giving you a soft, powdered makeup look.

I recommend ombré brows for:

  • All skin types, including oily or mature
  • Clients who love a more defined, polished finish
  • Those with little to no natural brow hair

Why my clients choose this look:

  • It’s longer-lasting and low maintenance
  • Heals beautifully, especially on oilier skin
  • Perfect for covering previous PMU

A few things to consider:

  • It has a softer, filled-in makeup effect
  • It’s less “hair-like” than hairstroke brows

Can You Combine the Two?

Yes—you absolutely can. This is what we call a hybrid brow, and it’s a popular choice. I often use hairstrokes at the front for a natural start, then blend in ombré shading through the arch and tail for depth and definition.

It gives you the best of both worlds—the softness of hairstrokes with the staying power of shading.

Which Brow Style Is Best for You?

It really depends on:

  • Your skin type
  • Your natural brows
  • How much time you spend on your brows daily
  • Whether you want a natural or more defined result

That’s why every PMU appointment with me starts with a full consultation. We’ll talk through your preferences, assess your skin, and decide together which technique will give you the best, most flattering result.
